Arches is one of the most tortured, breathtaking, and unusual places on earth. Turns out the formations are the result of a salt deposit under the topography created when an inland sea evaporated. Much of the erosion is initiated by chemical reactions on the rock combined with the movement of the salt that allows massive shifts in the rock that drops some areas and raises others, cracking and crushing the sandstone.
